Membership Information
Formed in 1950, POWA is the largest state outdoor writer organization in the country. With well over 400 Active, Associate, Apprentice and Supporting Members, the primary reason for POWA's
existence centers around craft improvement - becoming better, more knowledgeable, more highly skilled communicators. Individual members are committed to helping one another. They'll help you become a better
communicator if you join, despite the fact that you'll be competing directly with them in this field. The feeling of camaraderie among us is strong. POWA members have a strong regard for and a commitment to our
natural resources.
Types of Individual Membership Available
ACTIVE - This category is specifically geared to those who are active in the
outdoor communications field. There are minimum requisits regarding the amount
of material potential prospects have had published or aired previously. These
minimums must be maintained each year once you become a member.
APPRENTICE - This category is geared to members and potential members who
have not had enough material published or aired to qualify for ACTIVE
membership. An APPRENTICE can only remain in this category for two years. By
then, it is intended, that person will have progressed to the point that he or
she meets the minimum requirements for ACTIVE membership.
Benefits of Active Membership
- You'll receive our bimonthly newsletter - PowWow. It's full of
information about the organization and always has craft improvement
information included.
- A membership directory, updated annually, will be sent with your new
membership card. This directory lists each member's address, media
affiliation, credits and specialties. A SUPPORTING member listing is also
included in the directory.
- You're invited to attend our meetings - held twice a year.
- We have writing, photo, art and other professionally judged contests
you'll be invited to enter. Craft Improvement workshops, designed to help you become a better
communicator, are a part of each semi-annual meeting.
- Contact with other writers at conferences results in renewed enthusiasm
for our work as well as new insights into our business.
- Contact with editors and others which could make the marketing of your
material easier. There's liaison with manufacturers of outdoor products and services - always
an added source of story material.
- And a lot more!

Potential Supporting Member? How You Can Benefit from Joining POWA:
The more active role you and your company take as a SUPPORTING member of POWA,
the more potential you have for significant benefits. You'll receive our
membership directory immediately upon acceptance. This can be used as an address
list for news releases about your company's products. The directory also
provides immediate access to addresses and phone numbers of individual members
you might want to contact about special field testing, evaluation projects,
suggesting story ideas. The possibilities of how you can profitably use the POWA
Directory are limited only by your imagination.
The more you become involved in our semiannual meetings, the more visible
your company and its products and services become exposed to the ACTIVE and
APPRENTICE members. At these meetings you'll be able to display those products,
explain and talk about them to members on a one-to-one basis. SUPPORTING members
have the opportunity to host meals and participate in breakout sessions and
other activities at the semi-annual meetings, form a close relationship with the
writers and receive the bimonthly newsletter, PowWow.
